BAGHDAD, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- A bombardment targeted an airport in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region on Monday, killing six people and wounding one, local officials and medical sources told Xinhua.

The attack took place in the afternoon at the Arbat Agricultural Airport on the southeastern outskirts of Sulaymaniyah city, some 325 kilometers northeast of Baghdad, a Kurdish security source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

"It is not yet clear whether the bombing was caused by a drone, artillery, or missile shelling," the source said.

"The security authorities are still trying to find whether the bombing was a terrorist attack, an attack that occurred by mistake, or was carried out by an external party," the source said.

He added that the security forces cordoned off the airport and investigations were underway to determine the nature of the attack and who carried it out.

A medical source at Shar Hospital in Sulaymaniyah told Xinhua that six people were killed in the bombing of Arbat airport and another person was severely wounded, stressing that the hospital was on high alert after the attack.

The Kurdish security authorities have yet to make an official statement on the attack.
