Iraq seeks Chinese expertise to advance "Development Road" project: deputy speaker

BAGHDAD, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi parliament First Deputy Speaker Adnan Faihan on Sunday stressed the importance of drawing on Chinese expertise to implement the country's "Development Road" project.

The project is a key pillar in transforming Iraq into an economic corridor linking East and West, helping expand development and investment opportunities, Faihan said in a statement.

He also said that parliament is ready to provide legislative support and to form a specialized parliamentary team to expedite procedures in coordination with the government.

Faihan added that the project would help maximize Iraq's resources and drive development across multiple sectors.

Iraq launched the 17-billion-U.S.-dollar "Development Road" project in 2023. It aims to connect a major commodities port on the country's southern coast to the border with Trkiye through railways and roads, in a bid to transform Iraq from an oil-dependent economy into a major transit hub between Asia and Europe.
